Faux Florals and Greenery

Are you on the fence about using artificial flowers in your home? I understand. I didn’t use to like them either. Remember, though, today’s artificial flowers aren’t your mother’s artificial flowers. As a matter of fact, I’ve re-branded them as “faux” florals. It’s just a play on words and there is no difference between artificial and faux florals as far as this conversation progresses. Today’s faux florals and greenery are more life-like, they are plentiful, they offer more options than before, and they are cost-effective. Here are a few points I would like to make regarding using faux florals and greenery in your home décor:

  1. Quality
We’ve already touched on the improved quality of faux florals over the years. Almost all florals are silk (or silk-like polyester) and most greenery is plastic, although I prefer silk. While price can be a factor on the quality you are able to utilize, even the least expensive florals are better than they were 20 years ago! The trick is to be choosy. I’ve used Dollar Tree florals alongside expensive designer picks and bouquets with stunning results. Explore your online ordering options, if needed, but purchasing in person is the best way to familiarize yourself with the choices available.
  2. Budget Friendly
Not only is the initial cost of faux flowers less than the cost of real ones, they last longer and don’t need to be replaced as often. Make sure to check your arrangements and wreaths occasionally though, because if the silk flowers start to look a little ragged, you can take small, sharp scissors and trim off the little threads. I use this spray to protect silk and polyester flowers:

One thing to consider is that UV resistant greenery is available and you can use it in pots on your porch for very life-like decor! It’s more expensive, but I use it when making funeral or grave decorations
  3. Care
Considering how long faux florals and greenery last, a tiny amount of care is nothing! I have found that I remember to clean them at least twice a year – at Easter and Christmas. That’s when I do my best deep cleaning and when I am likely to change out some of my arrangements and wreaths. Here is a link for the cleaner I use for my silk plants.

To clean the plastic greenery takes a little bit more care, just a little special attention! If you use your hairdryer on the lowest setting, that will blow off a lot of loose dust. That’s easy to incorporate into your regular cleaning routine. If you need more cleaning power, use a mixture of water, vinegar, and just barely a drop of Dawn dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. A swipe with a lint free cloth will get the job done. I know one lady that if she is re-purposing plastic greenery, she will put the piece on the top shelf of her dishwasher and run a quick cycle!

To sum it all up, I hope you feel more at ease to at least try to use faux flowers and greenery. They are versatile, budget friendly, and long lasting. I hope you consider following me on Facebook and YouTube, where I show all the different ways I like to use artificial flowers and greenery.
